Interpretation of Lab Tests

 

Purpose

The activity is to provide an update and overview on the interpretation of lab tests for nurses in all clinical settings. Barb will discuss the most common lab tests including the WBC and differential, the lipid profile, the interpretation of anemias, and common conditions associated with elevated intracellular enzymes.


Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. List the 5 mature WBCs and the one immature WBC that circulate in peripheral blood.

  2. Discuss the functions of each of the WBCs.

  3. Correlate common clinical conditions with each of the above WBCs.  

  4. Discuss the interpretation of the serum protein electrophoresis.

  5. Describe the maturation process of the RBC.

  6. List the essential substances necessary for RBC production.

  7. List the common lab tests used to determine RBC function. 

  8. Correlate common clinical conditions with RBC interpretation.

  9. List the common enzymes used for interpreting clinical conditions.

  10. Correlate common clinical conditions with the above enzymes.

 

Successful completion for nursing contact hours

  • Payment of $25/person

  • Complete evaluation form

  • Complete and submit the 10 item post test

  • Scoring of at least 75% is required for successful completion.
