Physical Assessment Pearls

 

Purpose

The learner is guided through assessment basics--listening to heart and lung sounds, a  quick neuro exam, abdominal assessment, and more.  After Barb has given you the techniques of assessment, Barb guides the learner will go through a differential diagnosis for various acute symptoms—chest pain, dyspnea, abdominal pain...patient characteristics, disease processes, and more...

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the importance of taking a thorough history.

  2. Describe the PQRST mnemonic for characterizing the chief complaint

  3. Review the use of the various types of equipment used for the physical assessment exam.

  4. Discuss the general components of the physical exam.

  5. Interpret the findings of the vital signs.

  6. Describe the techniques of examination of the following components of the physical exam

  7. Correlate the clinical findings with common clinical conditions. 

 

Successful completion for nursing contact hours
